AoA are delighted to announce that Mr Gary Smith – GMB Scotland Secretary – has been confirmed as Chair of Action on Asbestos

As you are aware, due to the ongoing pandemic our AGM, which was supposed to take place on Saturday 17th August at Glasgow City Chambers, was unable to proceed. The Charity was in touch with the Charity’s governing body OSCR, who agreed for almost all Charities to postpone this event. The incumbent Directors all continued as Directors for the Charity.

OSCR stipulated that the Chair, after a 3-year term of office must stand down. This meant that our Chair Mr James Kelso stood down as Chair on the 17th August and the Acting Chair, Gary Smith, took over this position. Mr Gary Smith has now been confirmed as our new Chair with Mr James Kelso now becoming Vice-Chair.  Mr Ian Gifford is now Treasurer with Bobby Thomson becoming Secretary. Phyllis Craig MBE will also continue as a director of the charity.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Jim Kelso for his sterling work as Chair and are delighted that he will remain on our board of directors as Vice-Chair.  We would also like to welcome Gary to his new position, confirming his commitment to all those in Scotland suffering from asbestos or industrial diseases.  Here’s what Gary said about his new role as Chair of Action on Asbestos:
